She tiptoes around me, bent over so that her heart pieces, having less distance to fall, are less likely to wake me. The following words have already formed in her head in the event that my eyes do open:

Oh please don't worry, it's only mine that I'm breaking. Yours is going to be just fine!

Oh mine's breaking reading this. It reminds me of my mother, who always protected us from her heartbreak even when she was in bits. I sometimes wish I could turn back the clock and look after her better with this grown-up insight that I didn't have then...

it is beautiful and does strike a sad chord with me. it reminds me of the sacrifices mom's often make for their kids.
