Best Friends,Boys and Horses

It's July and I'm dragging a big scrub brush along JP's thick, gleaming neck, and pretending he's mine. My best friend is behind me with "Cuz", my Instructor crush is in front of me with "Jessie", and the opening lines of my favorite song have just started to play on the radio. Yes!

I feel beautiful, my tall black boots coated in dust, hay sticking out from my ponytail. Chris is untangling the hose and wait Oh no he's soaking us!

Caity and I scream and duck into the empty stalls. Oh my Gosh we have white tee-shirts on! The horses snort and role their eyes. Oh my Gosh, is Chris in trouble? Chris is totally in trouble with the director.

I saunter back and lean into JP and ask him to lift his leg, begrudgingly he obliges. I carve dirt out of his shoe and look forward to rehashing the water incident over and over with Caity when we are back at my house. I need that single now too, perhaps we can stop at Strawberry's on the way home. I smile at the arrival of this summer's soundtrack.

We finish up, grab our lunches and walk out of the barn. The sun is....wow. So hot. But Chris is chilling in the back of his red truck and we hop in and get the scoop. He steals my chips and makes them disappear, so when he leans back for a nap, cowboy hat shielding his face from the sun, we tie his shoelaces together.

The plan is to take the horses swimming after lunch, and they're going to try me out on Jessie, the crazy one. Summer, I love you. Is there a day in your calendar when I will kiss a boy? A question more for my diary perhaps, but if you could just give me some indication so I will be ready....

Oh how fun and free - to be a teen in summer! Playing like a kid, yearning to be a woman. And yes, asking the calendar 'when...'

"so i will be ready..."

perfect positioning. vivid description. i am in the middle of the story, sitting on the barn door, a silent observer.
